KENNY WERNER is a pianist of seemingly infinite capacity, and a Grammy-nominated composer as well, and an evening with Kenny is a lyrical (but never predictable) journey through the vast seas of improvised music. His longtime trio with Ari Hoenig and Johannes Weidenmueller is state of the art for a piano trio, as evidenced on their recent Pirouet CD The Melody, their first in 8 years. And Poesia, Kenny's duo CD with Brazilian vocalist Joyce Moreno, generated nice tours for them both here and abroad. Next year will see both solo and trio new releases on Pirouet, and Kenny would also like to work more with his Balloons Quintet (after their Half-Note CD of the same name), with Randy Brecker, David Sanchez, Scott Colley, and Antonio Sanchez.
In addition, Kenny's writing for large ensembles is nothing short of brilliant. His masterwork, No Beginning No End, a commissioned suite for Jazz soloists + a 36-piece wind ensemble, that Kenny wrote in memory of his late daughter Katheryn, earned Kenny a Guggenheim award, and was released on Half-Note. For the deeply moving story behind this extraordinary music, visit nobeginningnoend. Kenny followed that up with more great writing for his Half-Note CD Institute of Higher Learning, with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra. Kenny welcomes new commissions, so if you want to premiere a riveting new work for big band or jazz orchestra, get in touch with me.
In addition to his playing and composing, Kenny is also a teacher of profound insight, who has literally changed students' lives. Now Director of Berklee's EFFORTLESS MASTERY Institute, based on the principles in Kenny's book of the same name, he is much sought after for college lectures and residencies, and while on campus often performs as guest artist with student ensembles, as well as with the trio.
