DAVID SÁNCHEZ
Over the past several years I've gotten to know David through his work with my pianist Kenny Werner, and during that time I've become a great admirer of David's playing. No tenor saxophonist today is better at constructing a solo and telling a story on his horn. So I'm delighted to add this Grammy-winning artist to my roster and to represent David's own bands, including his newest project CARIB. In a deeply personal journey David uses a modern Jazz context to explore the kinship between the West African drum rhythms of Yuba, Calinda, and Sika and music in Haiti, Carriacou, and his native Puerto Rico. CARIB is a sonic story that interweaves the colors and textures of the Caribbean, the rhythms of Africa, and the soul of Jazz. David will tell this story using his core quartet of Venezuelan pianist Luis Perdomo, Puerto Rican bassist Ricky Rodriguez, and Haitian-American drummer Obed Calvaire, plus guitar and/or percussion, and - where desired and the budget permits - a dancer. The first recording of this project is due out in March 2018, so stay tuned. ----------------- |
