Trio Imagination

Avenir Light is a clean and stylish font favored by designers. It's easy on the eyes and a great go-to font for titles, paragraphs & more.

I’m really excited about the trio of drummer Andrew Cyrille, bassist Reggie Workman, and Cuban pianist David Virelles, which formed after Oliver Lake retired from performing in early 2022, breaking up TRIO 3, his longtime trio with Andrew and Reggie.  The Bang on a Can Festival in NYC asked who else they might want to play with, and Reggie and Andrew both named David.  That concert in Spring 2022 confirmed the chemistry they thought they would have, Trio Imagination was born, and in 2023 they blew away audiences in Knoxville, Chicago, Detroit, and Buffalo.

Individually their credentials are off the charts.  Andrew has played with everyone from Coleman Hawkins and Mary Lou Williams to Cecil Taylor, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Vision Festival in NYC last year.  Reggie, who played bass with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and John Coltrane in his youth, was recently named an NEA Jazz Master.  David, still in his 30’s, has already recorded and played with some of the most creative musicians in Jazz, including Henry Threadgill, Chris Potter, Steve Coleman, and Ravi Coltrane, and has won the Downbeat Rising Star Poll on piano.

Andrew and Reggie are longtime faculty members at the New School in NYC, and have taught and mentored dozens of the next generation of Jazz greats, so if you present Trio Imagination you should also consider having one or both do a masterclass, or a Q&A on their long history in the music. David can also teach, and talk about his life growing up in Cuba and leaving at a young age to pursue a Jazz career in America.
